The Sheffield Inn was built
by Gilbert Smith in 1848. It soon became a popular boardinghouse
known as Orchard Shade. Guests would arrive by horse & buggy
or railroad, spending the entire summer, returning year after
year. With the advent of the automobile in the early twentieth
century, Orchard Shade, still operated by Smith ancestors, became
a guest house for those who vacationed for shorter periods of
time. Although the twenty-first century brings a new name and
new proprietors, the tradition of warmth and elegance continues.
In an atmosphere of
calm and seclusion, The Sheffield Inn successfully combines modern,
first class amenities with the gracious hospitality and stylish
décor normally associated with a bygone era. In subtle
fusion of styles both past and present, The Inn is appointed
with fine furniture, antiques, oriental rugs, a player grand
piano, and six exquisitely furnished guest rooms, distinctive
in color and motif.
Guests are invited
to explore our ten acres of natural fields and meadows (which
attracts a wide array of indigenous birds), swim in the heated
pool, or simply relax in a rocker on the veranda.
Ideally located in
southwestern Massachusetts, The Sheffield Inn is central to the
many attractions of the Berkshires:
